Governance and Guidelines

EIU Press operates under comprehensive policies governing editorial conduct, publication ethics, copyright, and the responsibilities of authors and reviewers.

Editorial Policy

Editorial decisions are made independently and solely on the basis of academic merit, scholarly quality, originality, relevance, and alignment with the mission of EIU Press. Decisions are not influenced by the nationality, gender, religion, institutional affiliation, or financial circumstances of any author or reviewer.

Following review, manuscripts may receive one of the following decisions: Accept; Accept with Minor Revisions; Revise and Resubmit; or Reject. The Editor-in-Chief has final authority over all editorial decisions. The Founding Patron and Publisher provides strategic oversight but does not interfere with editorial decisions relating to scholarly merit.

EIU Press maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward plagiarism, data fabrication, falsification, duplicate publication, and misrepresentation of authorship. Manuscripts suspected of such violations may be rejected or withdrawn from consideration at any stage.

Publication Ethics Policy

EIU Press is committed to the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and ethical conduct in academic publishing. All participants in the publishing process (authors, reviewers, and editors) are expected to uphold these principles at every stage.

Authors must ensure their work is original, that all sources are properly cited, and that no submitted content has been plagiarized. Multiple submissions without disclosure are not permitted.

Authors may use AI tools to support writing, editing, and literature exploration. However, AI systems may not be listed as authors, authors remain fully responsible for all submitted content, and fabricated citations, references, or data are strictly prohibited.

EIU Press reserves the right to issue corrections, expressions of concern, or retractions where significant errors, ethical violations, or integrity issues are identified after publication.

Copyright Policy

Authors retain copyright ownership of their published works. Publication through EIU Press does not transfer copyright ownership to the Press.

By accepting publication, authors grant EIU Press a non-exclusive, worldwide license to publish, distribute, archive, market, and promote the work in approved print and digital formats.

Authors retain the right to use their work for teaching, research, and educational purposes; deposit approved versions in personal or institutional repositories; share their work with colleagues and students; and include their work in future publications, provided original publication by EIU Press is acknowledged.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions for any third-party copyrighted material included in their work, including figures, images, tables, and extended quotations. Failure to obtain necessary permissions may delay or prevent publication.

Author Guidelines

EIU Press accepts submissions in the following categories: Academic Books, Doctoral Monographs, Conference Proceedings, Textbooks, Professional Handbooks, and Edited Volumes. Submissions must be written in clear, professional English (US or UK spelling, used consistently throughout).

Manuscript formatting requirements: Garamond 12pt; 1.15 line spacing; justified alignment; 6×9 inch page size; APA 7th Edition citations unless otherwise approved.

Required submission documents include: the manuscript; author biography (100–200 words) covering current position, institutional affiliation, and qualifications; abstract or book description (150–300 words); and keywords (5–10). An author photograph is optional.

AI tools may be used to support writing and editing. Authors remain fully responsible for all submitted content, must verify the accuracy of any AI-generated material, and must disclose significant AI use where appropriate. AI systems may not be listed as authors.

Reviewer Guidelines

Reviewers contribute significantly to the quality, integrity, and credibility of EIU Press publications. Reviewers are expected to conduct evaluations objectively, maintain confidentiality throughout the process, and provide constructive, professional feedback.

Reviews should address: originality and contribution to the field; scholarly quality and rigor; organization and logical structure; clarity and readability; accuracy of claims and references; and relevance to the press's mission and the intended audience.

All manuscripts received for review are confidential. Reviewers must not share, distribute, or use unpublished manuscript content for personal advantage. Reviewers must disclose any conflicts of interest (personal, professional, financial, or institutional) and decline assignments where impartiality cannot be maintained.

Reviews for books and monographs should be completed within 2–4 weeks. Reviews for conference proceedings within 1–3 weeks. All reviewer communications should be directed to press@eiu.ac.
