Copyright Policy

This Copyright Policy establishes the ownership, licensing, use, and protection of intellectual property published by EIU Press.

The policy aims to protect the rights of authors while enabling EIU Press to publish, distribute, archive, and promote scholarly works in accordance with its mission.

Unless otherwise specified in a separate written agreement, authors shall retain copyright ownership of their published works.

Authors remain the legal copyright holders of their intellectual property.

Publication through EIU Press does not transfer copyright ownership to the Press.

By accepting publication with EIU Press, authors grant the Press a non-exclusive, worldwide license to:

• Publish the work.
• Distribute the work.
• Archive the work.
• Market and promote the work.
• Make the work available in approved formats.
• Include the work in future catalogs, repositories, and promotional materials.

This license enables EIU Press to publish and maintain access to the work while allowing authors to retain copyright ownership.

The granted publishing license applies to formats including, but not limited to:

• PDF
• ePub
• Print-on-Demand editions
• Online publication
• Institutional repositories
• Future digital formats developed by EIU Press

Authors retain the right to:

• Be identified as the creator of their work.
• Reuse portions of their work in future publications.
• Use their work for teaching, research, and educational purposes.
• Deposit approved versions in personal or institutional repositories.
• Share their work with colleagues and students.
• Include their work in future edited volumes or collections.

Such use must appropriately acknowledge original publication by EIU Press.

EIU Press reserves the right to:

• Publish and distribute accepted works.
• Assign ISBNs and publication identifiers.
• Archive publications permanently.
• Produce revised editions where authorized.
• Market and promote publications.
• Maintain publication records and metadata.

The Press may discontinue distribution of a publication where necessary for legal, ethical, or operational reasons.

Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to use copyrighted materials owned by third parties, including:

• Figures
• Images
• Tables
• Graphs
• Illustrations
• Photographs
• Extended quotations
• Other copyrighted content

Authors shall provide evidence of permissions when requested.

Failure to obtain necessary permissions may result in delays, revisions, or rejection of the manuscript.

EIU Press may publish certain works under an open-access model.

Where open-access publication is selected, the applicable licensing terms shall be specified within the publication agreement and clearly displayed within the published work.

The Press may adopt Creative Commons licenses or other approved licensing frameworks where appropriate.

EIU Press may distribute publications through:

• The EIU Press website
• Institutional repositories
• Digital download platforms
• Print-on-Demand services
• Academic distribution partners
• Online bookstores

Revenue generated through publication sales shall be managed in accordance with university policies and any applicable publication agreements.

Unauthorized reproduction, distribution, modification, or commercial use of copyrighted materials published by EIU Press may constitute copyright infringement.

The Press reserves the right to take appropriate action to protect the intellectual property rights of authors and the university.

Requests for withdrawal or removal of published works shall be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Removal may be considered in circumstances involving:

• Legal requirements
• Copyright disputes
• Ethical concerns
• Significant publication errors
• Court orders or regulatory requirements

The scholarly record shall be preserved wherever possible.

Prior to publication, authors may be required to sign a publication agreement outlining:

• Copyright ownership
• Publishing rights granted to EIU Press
• Distribution arrangements
• Licensing terms
• Responsibilities of both parties

The publication agreement shall take precedence in the event of any conflict with this policy.

EIU Press reserves the right to amend this Copyright Policy as publishing practices, technologies, legal requirements, and institutional needs evolve.

EIU Press recognizes that authors are the creators and owners of their intellectual contributions. The Press is committed to protecting author rights while facilitating the dissemination, preservation, and accessibility of scholarly knowledge for the benefit of the global academic and professional community.
